Chapter Nine

The rescue mission was set to depart from the front drive, and all the inhabitants of the castle gathered at the steps to see them off. Parked in the drive was Glinda’s swan chariot, famous throughout the land of OZ. Its exterior was as white as the moon and gilded in gold. Even its large white wheels were pristine, as if they had never been driven.

Two magnificent white trumpeter swans stood proud and poised, harnessed to the chariot by long strands of gold gossamer. Hailed as the biggest and most beautiful birds in all of OZ, they were as tall as the drivers, with thick white plumage and black watchful eyes.

“You have my blessing,” Glinda said, as she protectively kissed the forehead of first Celeste and then Jasper. “Your safety is assured here in Quadling country, but when you enter back into Munchkinland, my magic bubble will encompass the chariot to protect you from any spells the witch may try to cast on you while in her territory.”

Celeste and Jasper thanked Glinda for everything she had done for them and climbed into the backseat. The upholstery was white leather and was exceedingly soft.

“It’s like sitting on a marshmallow,” declared Jasper. Glinda’s girls packed the chariot’s storage compartment with a basket full of food and drinks.

“Ready?” asked a girl who climbed into the driver’s seat. “I’m Emilie,” she said, flashing a friendly smile. “And I’m Clementine,” said another, as she clipped their spears onto the side of the chariot and then climbed in next to Emilie.

“We are the most experienced swan drivers in all of OZ,” Emilie assured her passengers. She placed the palm of her hand over the top of a large black orb set in a stand that was centered on the front dashboard. The orb had many functions, not the least of which was a built-in map of OZ and a guiding compass. Emilie moved her hand slightly over the orb turning it in a clockwise direction until she was satisfied that she had set the correct destination.

The drivers talked softly to each other.

Jasper and Celeste waved goodbye to Glinda’s girls, who all began to cry softly.

“Don’t cry,” Jasper pleaded. “Please don’t cry.”

But it was no use. Soon the sound of soft sobbing grew louder and louder. Even the wind seemed to be angry at their impending departure, becoming suddenly fierce and strong. The girls temporarily paused their weeping to look up at the sky in concern. Storms were not predicted, but the suddenly strong gusts of wind were alarming.

The whoosh of the wind sent all the tree branches thrashing back and forth. The source of this gale was soon visible on the horizon as a dark menacing cloud, moving toward them at a rapid rate. The sobbing stopped before it ever really got started, and all eyes became fixed on the oncoming cloud, when it suddenly descended quickly in the sky, as if it were aiming right at them.

A high-pitched squeaking then filled the air, and it was clear that this was no advancing cloud.
